a melancholy town,
where we never smile.
it'd been a while since maxine had been seen within the four walls of the island's only "fun" location, the bourbon. usually she was too busy drinking by herself in her room to be seen in such an atmosphere, around people who usually couldn't hold their own when it came to drinking. most people were amazed, considering everyone who'd enjoyed drinking before had usually turned to drinking in order to get over the current events going on outside the island. max's reasoning for drinking wasn't as heavily reliant on the infected, and scar's plans to throw and overcome what was left of the world. no, her reasons for drinking were much more personal, a given sign by the way she refused to sit herself anywhere open for conversation.
like many currently within the bar, a short glass was clenched within the grip of max's right hands' fingers. occasionally, she'd swirl the liquid inside just to hear the familiar clink of ice against glass, but she tried to hold herself back from lifting it up to her lips too often. the longer she could last without getting a refill would also hold her craving for nicotine off, at least for a few hours longer. max's smoking habits were kept under a strict lock and key, unlike the fact that she delved into alcohol on a regular basis. no one knew she was an alcoholic, not quite to that extent, but everyone was at least aware that max had a bottle in her quarters at all times.
with her chin propped in her left palm, max's eyes were lost in watching the sweat from her glass drop down to the table's surface, the dim lighting within the bar giving her just enough light to make out the shimmer. her mind was flooding with images and memories of her mercenary life before the world went to shit, and she'd been in control of so much less, yet had felt so empowered. now, being responsible for so many people, the type of power that normally would've come with all of it just felt a lot more like a burden.
so lost in thought, it hadn't even occurred to her when someone had started to walk towards her table in the back corner, something that was extremely out of character for fallen's leader to do. at the sound of someone's voice, it took her a delayed moment to realize that she'd been addressed with something, and after blinking away her thoughts, the woman glanced up towards who'd approached her. narrowing her eyes, she tried to make out what they'd said, but she couldn't come up with anything.
"i'm sorry, what? did you say something?"
