here were nights when just the idea of falling into a fitful sleep were enough to keep benjamin up. it was better to stay awake with his thoughts, than wake up drenched in a cold sweat, regretting his entire life. at least his thoughts were never as dark as his dreams. however, the problem with insomnia was that there was too much time for ben to kill. after lights out, the entire island was dead quiet. ben usually took the night rounds, which gave him the chance to sneak out to the mainland when he needed to. tonight though, there was no need for that. other than the usual amount of stress, ben was feeling better than usual. it was a quiet night after he finished his rounds and ben was actually ready to crawl into bed. he couldn't even remember the last time he'd had a decent night of sleep. at this point, even the drugs couldn't help.
despite how exhausted he felt though, the moment ben laid down, he could no longer sleep. he spent a couple hours tossing and turning, trying to get comfortable. when that failed, he flopped on his back and stared at the ceiling in hopes of boring himself to sleep. when that failed to work, ben gave up and rolled out of bed. while there weren't many options to keep himself occupied, he figured it wouldn't hurt to go on his morning run a couple hours early. the only good thing about being awake this early was the peace and quiet. the weather lately had been perfect, sunny with just a slight breeze. combined with the silence, it was nearly enough to give ben a sense of normality. it was the one time of day when he could pretend that he had his life in order. downing a couple pills, ben changed into a light t-shirt and sweatpants. as usual, before he left, ben strapped his gun around his right leg. there might not have been a threat, but years of living with the possibility of being attacked had left him paranoid.
ben ran until he could feel his muscles burning in protest. the pain in his left leg was sharp, warning him to stop, but he ran until he could no longer feel the pain. by the time he stopped, the first light of sunrise was just peeking over the horizon. he paused for only a minute, taking in the calm around him. with a soft sigh, he found a spot away from the buildings to avoid people as they started waking up. sitting cross-legged in the grass, ben closed his eyes and took a deep breath in. when ben was first injured, he spent a year in physical therapy, trying to train his body back to what it once was. his ex-wife had suggested yoga and despite ben's protest, she dragged him along to a class. he soon found that was it actually doing more for him than the therapy. since then, he'd made a habit to include it in his workout. nowadays though, it was more for the stress-relief than anything.
exhaling slowly, ben easily switched from his sitting position to pull his legs underneath him. with his hands resting on the ground, he pushed his body up, carefully resting his weight on his head. when he was sure that he was stable, he laced his fingers together and rested them behind his head, his forearms offering the extra support he needed. his eyes were still closed as he started slowly counting to himself. even though he was focused on his breathing, ben still heard the rustle of movement. his body tensed slightly as he listened for the sound of a weapon being drawn. when there was none, ben figured he had a curious onlooker. either way, he didn't like being disrupted. "breakfast starts at seven in the cafeteria, which is the opposite way," he opened his eyes to locate whomever had intruded. "so. how can i help you?"
